To secure its continued stay in Ligue 1 on appeal on July 10, Lyon must immediately inject more than €100 million into its accounts. It must also present a guarantee of at least another €100 million for the remainder of the season.

How Lyon’s successful relegation appeal impacts three USMNT players

Lyon ensured their place in Ligue 1 for the coming season, winning their appeal over relegation imposed upon them by the body that oversees the finances of French football teams.

That means the club, where U.S. midfielder Tanner Tessmann plays and where U.S. goalkeeper Matt Turner is reportedly headed to, will remain in the French top flight after all next season – and crucially take their place in the 2025-26 UEFA Europa League.

While Lyon’s appeal win is an undisputed win for the French club, Turner is still waiting for official confirmation of his move from Nottingham Forest to the Groupama stadium. Last month The Athletic reported that the two clubs have agreed a fee of €8 million (£6.74m) for the 31-year-old, who made just four appearances while spending the season on loan with Palace.

Turner was part of Mauricio Pochettino’s squad at the Gold Cup but did not play a minute, with New York City FC’s Matt Freese selected ahead of him throughout. Turner had started, and struggled, in the U.S.’s 4-0 friendly defeat to Switzerland prior to the tournament.

Lyon paid eight million euros ($9.2 million) for the 31-year-old who has 52 caps for the United States. A 10 percent profit-sharing interest on the capital gain of a potential future transfer is included in the transaction.

Turner's loan to the New England Revolution comes with a three-million euro purchase option.

American goalkeeper Matt Turner will return to the New England Revolution on loan from French Ligue 1 club Olympique Lyonnais, commonly known as Lyon, through June 30, 2026, with an option to purchase. Turner will be a Designated Player on New England’s roster for the remainder of the 2025 MLS season and will be a TAM-eligible player in 2026.

“It is a privilege to return to the club that launched my career," Turner said. "The club that helped me discover who I am as a professional, the club that has always felt like a home away from home. To have the chance to play in front of the Revolution supporters once again is a priceless feeling and one I’ve never taken for granted. My family and I have felt their unwavering support throughout these last three years, and I can’t wait to wear the Revolution crest again at Gillette Stadium. I am grateful for this opportunity to earn my place on the field and look forward to winning many more games with the Revolution.”

Turner will begin training with New England next week and will be eligible to feature in the Revolution’s next match on Saturday, August 9 vs. D.C. United. The home contest at Gillette Stadium, also the club’s first "Alumni Night" celebration, kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET, available to watch on MLS Season Pass (Apple TV). The Revolution are 11th in the Eastern Conference, 10 points out of the final playoff spot.

In his last full season stateside before transferring to Arsenal, Turner won 2021 Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year and MLS Best XI honors, took home the MLS All-Star Game MVP Award, and helped lead New England to the club’s first Supporters’ Shield title. At the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup, Turner posted five shutouts in six starts, taking home Golden Glove and Best XI honors. That same year, he finished as runner-up to Christian Pulisic for 2021 U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year.
