Daugavpils football officials catch Gavrilov in manipulation thanks to Ukrainian goalkeeper
https://jauns.lv/raksts/sports/629956-daugavpils-futbola-darboni-gavrilovu-pieker-manipulacijas-pateicoties-ukrainu-vartsargamThe former president of the Daugavpils football club "Dinaburg", Oleg Gavrilovs, who was banned from Latvian football for life, and several players were caught manipulating the results of football matches thanks to a Ukrainian football goalkeeper and an investigative experiment, reports the portal "delfi.lv".
Latgale District Court continued to hear a criminal case today in which five people are accused of manipulation of sports competition results by an organized group. Publicly available information in the court calendar shows that in addition to Gavrilovs, former Premier League and First League players Edgars Obodņikovs, Ričards Grauze, Edgars Andrejevs and Ričards Jirgensons are accused in the case. Gavrilovs has also previously been accused in another criminal case of match-fixing.
"Delfi" reports that Gavrilov partially admitted his guilt at the court hearing, while two other defendants fully admitted their guilt. Gavrilov had hoped to reach an agreement with the prosecutor's office, but the case will continue because an agreement was not reached.
According to the prosecutor's office, the organized group was formed by Gavrilovs and Grauzes, Obodnikovs was involved in placing bets, while Jurgensons and Andrejevs were involved in real actions on the field, influencing the course of the game. On Gavrilovs's instructions, Grauzes was to look for Latvian Premier League and First League footballers who would be willing to engage in criminal activities for a fee, manipulating the result of the game.
Episodes of attempts to influence the results of two games have reached the courts - in one case the game was influenced, and in the other case the suspects were unable to place a bet because they were detained.
The alleged criminal violations were recorded thanks to Ukrainian goalkeeper Danilo Kucher, who played for "BFC Daugavpils" in 2019. The Ukrainian goalkeeper refused to engage in suspicious activities. Later, the Ukrainian reported what was happening to the responsible authorities. With the involvement of Kucher, the police conducted an investigative experiment, which ended with the arrest of the alleged perpetrators.
Investigators have determined that, on Gavrilov's instructions, Grauze promised Kučer 3,000 euros for one "required" result via the Telegram app. Gavrilov also encouraged Grauze to arrange a meeting with the Ukrainian goalkeeper, which did happen - Grauze introduced Kučer to Gavrilov as a football agent. During the meeting, Kučer was offered the opportunity to "earn" up to 5,000 euros, the prosecutor's office claims.
Gavrilov chose the match to be influenced by BFC Daugavpils' away match against Riga FC, which took place on September 30, 2019. Grauze and Gavrilov were unable to place bets on this match because they were detained.
The second episode is related to the Latvian First League game between "Smiltene/BJSS" and "Dinamo Rīga/Staicele" teams, in which the accused Jürgensons and Andrejevs played in 2019. The game in Smiltene took place on September 21, the home team won, and Jürgensons scored two goals.
Grauze, following Gavrilov's instructions, had agreed with Jürgensons and Andrejevs that they would ensure the desired result of the game - both teams had to score more than three goals together. The prosecution believes that Jürgensons and Andrejevs agreed to Grauze's offer. If Jürgensons had not scored during the game, then Andrejevs would have to concede a specific number of goals, the prosecution's indictment states.
Another person was involved in the incident, who was unaware of the game's outcome being influenced. In the end, a bet of 390 euros was placed that at least four goals would be scored in the game. The bet, with odds of 1.8, was successful, as seven goals were scored in the game, according to information heard in court.
In Gavrilov's opinion, the winnings were not enough, so the winnings remained with Obodnikov. In turn, Grauze later transferred an amount of his own funds to Jurgensons for a service that was not disclosed in the investigation. Jurgensons then transferred part of this amount to Andreevs for the work done.
Gavrilov's defenders want former football referee and Latgale customs officer Vladimir Vinokurovs to testify in court. In 2017, he came to the center of media attention when it was revealed that Vinokurovs had won half a million euros in gambling over three years. Then in 2017, Vinokurovs earned about 50,000 euros in gambling winnings, but in 2018 he had stopped gambling, having won only less than 3,000 euros. In early 2019, Vinokurovs left his position at the State Revenue Service.
The third person invited by Gavrilov's defense is Krišjānis Kļaviņš, who is well-known in sports circles and has often been suspected of having ties to match-fixing. Kļaviņš has never denied knowing Gavrilov.
